Rock Band
| Guns ‘n’ Roses may have played in Brisbane but their concert had nothing on the show our little rock stars presented in Week 7, Term 4. The music was pumpin’, the crowd was jumpin’, and the courtyard echoed with the sounds of drums, guitars, keyboards, and award-worthy vocals. Rock on O.L.D.! |

Remembrance Day
| At Our Lady of Dolours, we honour the many Defence families who form part of our school community, the brave men and women who fought for our freedoms in past theatres of war, and those who continue to serve our country in the Defence Forces. On Remembrance Day our children participated in “Draw to Remember”, creating a visual representation of our pride for those who serve, and the families that support them. Lest we Forget.

Arbor Day
| To celebrate Arbor Day, students at O.L.D. planted almost 80 new native plants around the school, creating a greener, shadier environment and supporting native fauna. Pope Francis reminds us, “Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it, and thus in constant interaction with it.” Thanks to Brisbane City Council for donating plants and supporting our efforts to be good stewards of the Earth.

Lots of Socks
| On 14 October 2022, we celebrated Lots of Socks Day, with students and teachers alike hunting through their cupboards for their coolest socks to wear to school. The Lots of Socks campaign aims to raise awareness of Down syndrome in the community and to remind us to be accepting of each other’s differences and the things that make us unique as individuals. Everyone belongs at O.L.D.

Social Emotional Learning
| Academic education is very important, but it isn’t the only learning young children need. Kids need to know about keeping their bodies and minds healthy too! Children in Prep are currently learning about our brains and how we each have different types of ‘smarts’. Some of us have sports smarts, some of us have computer smarts and some of us have friend smarts. All of these types of smarts make us who we are.

Living Our Vision and Values
| Our School Values are so much more than words on a poster! We believe in the compassion, wisdom and justice of Christ and we strive to show these values in our actions every day.

Our Lady of Dolours Feast Day
| September 15, 2022, was the Feast Day of Our Lady of Dolours, the Patron Saint of our school. We took the opportunity to reflect on the life of this incredible woman and celebrated Mass in her honour. Afterwards, we were treated to cake for morning tea, followed by a disco in the MPC.

Showcasing our littlest readers. These children have had the building blocks of reading and writing since infancy when their mums and dads read them stories and recited nursery rhymes to them. Now, they can put it all together themselves, learning strategies to support their developing literacy skills.

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax all you need is a book."
Dr. Seuss knew what he was talking about! We enjoyed a magical week celebrating books, with our dress-up character parade thrown in.

Learning happens every day in every way at O.L.D. Our Year Four and Five students got busy creating - and learning - at the
Make & Meld Workshops.

Our gorgeous Preps celebrated 100 days of school. That's 100 days of being valued members of our little school community and 100 days of Living, Loving and Learning.
|
| We celebrated a very meaningful Feast Day, that of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. St Mary of the Cross spent her life working to make education accessible to all children, especially the poor and disadvantaged. Her legacy is one of kindness and compassion “Find happiness in making others happy”.

Pope Francis poses the question, “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” At O.L.D., we know the future lies in the hands of the children in our care, and we are proud to be guiding them on their journey as responsible stewards of the Earth.
| | In Catholic Education Week, we celebrated the theme,
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲. Catholic schools like Our Lady of Dolours School strive to make a difference in the world; challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
| | Learning to read is much more than simply decoding letters and sounds; words must make meaning within their context. Our teachers love opening up the beautiful world of reading and literacy for our children. It looks like the students are enjoying themselves too!
| | All our little
Kids in the Crest know the behaviour expectations at O.L.D. - Act Responsibly, Be Respectful and Strive to Achieve. These guidelines will serve our children well, not only at primary school but throughout the rest of their lives.
|
| The wind did its best to beat us, but we were determined to welcome everyone back to Term Three with this special video message (and share a sneak peek of the beautiful new gardens with you).
